Carteolol is a drug from the group of non-selective beta blockers with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. By acting on the cardiac β 1 - and β 2 -receptors, Carteolol lowers the beat rate and the contraction force of the heart, the AV conduction velocity and the plasma renin activity. It is therefore indicated for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and angina pectoris .

The active ingredient was patented by Otsuka Pharmaceutical in 1973 .

Carteolol further lowers the intraocular pressure by decreasing the production of aqueous humor and in the treatment of glaucoma used. The exact mechanism of action is not known.
