Casimir Rudolf Katz

Casimir Rudolf Katz (born June 6, 1824 in Gernsbach ; † March 10, 1880 in Berlin ) was a timber industrialist and member of the German Reichstag .

Life

Katz came from a Gernsbach Murgschiffer family . He attended the Lyceum in Karlsruhe and individual subjects at the Polytechnic Karlsruhe and the University of Berlin . He did commercial studies in Rotterdam and Brussels and made extensive trips, especially to Great Britain, including during the turmoil of the revolution in 1848. As the largest shareholder and chairman of the board of directors of the Murgschifferschaft, he owned forests and sawmills in the Murg Valley . He brought new methods of impregnating wood and new sawmill techniques with him from Great Britain and thus modernized his company. After his father's death in 1852, he took on the timber merchant Gottlieb Klumpp as a partner in the Katz und Klumpp company in Gernsbach. The important products included cyanized telegraph poles for the rapidly expanding telegraph network .

Casimir Rudolf Katz was the initiator of Murgthal Railway Company , the 1868-1869 the railway line from Rastatt to Gernsbach built, the first section of today's Murgtalbahn . In doing so, he created a basis for the further industrialization of the Murg Valley. He was also one of the founders of the Gernsbach District Savings Bank (1857) and the Gernsbacher Advance Association (1873, forerunner of the Volksbank ), both of which he chaired the board of directors.

From 1877 until his death he was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency of Baden 9 ( Pforzheim , Durlach , Ettlingen , Gernsbach) and the Conservative Party , of which he was one of the founding members in Baden . He was also a member of the district assembly with a viril vote , of the political and church council. His third child was Casimir Otto Katz (* July 16, 1856 , † 1919 ), the pioneer of industrial beer mat production .
