Ludwig Julius Caspar Mende (born September 14, 1779 in Greifswald , † April 23, 1832 in Göttingen ) was a German gynecologist , obstetrician and coroner .

Life

Ludwig Mende attended the large city school in Greifswald. In 1797 he began studying medicine at the University of Greifswald , which he continued from 1799 to 1801 in Berlin , Würzburg , Bamberg and Göttingen. After obtaining his doctorate in Göttingen in 1801, he settled in Greifswald as a general practitioner and private lecturer. In 1807 he became an adjunct in the medical faculty and assessor at the Royal College of Health in Swedish Pomerania . In 1814 he was associate professor and from 1815 full professor of medicine at the University of Greifswald. In 1820 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

As the successor to Johann Friedrich Osiander (1787–1855), he went in 1823 as professor of forensic medicine and obstetrics at the Georg August University of Göttingen . Until his death in 1832 he was the director of the clinic for gynecology and obstetrics at the university. In 1825 he was elected a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Mende he dealt scientifically and medically with the " artificial premature birth " practiced in England after the expansion . During his tenure, 1,300 deliveries were carried out, and it was noticeable that forceps delivery did not even make up 5%.

The therapy of uterine cancer , the trained training of midwives and gynecology became a focus of science and research.

Eduard Caspar Jacob von Siebold became his successor.
