Castle Gurteen de la Poer

The Castle Gurteen de la Poer (or Castle Gurteen Le Poer , Irish Caisleán to Ghoirtín Paorach ) is a country house in the neo-Elizabethan style in Kilsheelan , around 8 km east of Clonmel in Ireland's County Waterford . The house is on the south bank of the Suir .

The property belonged to the De la Poers , an Anglo-Norman family whose affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church later ejected from the Protestant , English led society. Count Edmund de la Poer, 18th Lord le Poer and Curraghmore , a Knight of Malta and Chamberlain to Pope Pius X , began construction of the current building in 1863. It replaced an earlier house, which in turn replaced an even earlier house.

The great noble house was designed by Samuel Ussher Roberts (1821-1900), great-grandson of the famous architect John Roberts from Waterford . The architectural style of Castle Gurteen de la Poer may have been influenced by the Scottish architect William Burn , who was responsible for the construction of some Tudor-style country houses in Great Britain . Construction began in 1863 and was completed in 1866. After Castle Gurteen de la Poer was completed, Samuel Ussher Roberts designed Kylemore Castle (now Kylemore Abbey ) in County Galway . Lots of details can be seen on both country houses and the same builder, Thomas Carroll , worked on both houses.

description

The entrance facade has a large tower with a square floor plan and an attached, polygonal tourelle , which stands over a forecourt of crenellated walls. The interiors are spacious and in the middle of the house is a knight's hall with a gallery that is lit from above and is divided by a screen of Gothic arches, behind which there is a staircase.

There are similar arches on the gallery on the first floor; like the staircase, it has a wrought iron balustrade . The library with shelves has red walls and the drawing room and ballroom open into each other along the garden facade.

The dining room on the other side of the great hall is in Victorian aristocratic style; it has red walls running over a lambris of brown oak paneling . The mantelpiece made of carved oak shows heraldic angels holding a shield with the family coat of arms, and the head of a Hubertus deer - the family helmkleinod - with the antlers and the crucifix on top of the mantelpiece.

history

The De la Poer family claims the descent from Sir Robert de Poer , who came to Ireland with Strongbow in 1172 . The English King Henry II , who gave Robert de Poer the city of Waterford “with the entire province around it” in a charter, appointed him Marshal of Ireland.

Edmund de la Poer, 18th Lord le Poer and Curraghmore , (1841-1915), who commissioned the construction of Castle Gurteen de la Pore in 1863, was appointed 1st Count de la Poer ( papal nobility ) in 1864. The Earl was High Sheriff of County Waterford in 1879 , Chamberlain to Pope Pius IX. and in 1909 Lord Lieutenant of Waterford County and City.

His second eldest son, John William Rivallon de la Poer, JP , 19th Baron and 2nd Earl , (1882-1939) was High Sheriff of County Waterford in 1913 . In 1922 he claimed the Barony de la Poer and Curraghmore and the Committee of Privileges of the House of Lords decided that the claim was justified with the exception of forfeiture by John Power in 1691.

His eldest son, Edmond Robert Arnold de la Poer, 20th Baron and 3rd Earl , followed as 20th Baron le Poer and Curraghmore in 1939. He sold Castle Gurteen de la Poer in 1979, but retained the right to move to the west wing of the country house. He died on November 20, 1995 at the age of 84.

Gottfried Helnwein

In 1998 the artist Gottfried Helnwein bought Castle Gurteen de la Poer and commissioned restoration work on the country house and gardens. He has lived there with his family since 2016 and also works there.

A number of guests have been invited since Helnwein has lived there. There were also quite a few from the entertainment industry, e.g. B.
