Celso Pereira de Almeida

Celso Pereira de Almeida OP (born March 7, 1928 in Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo , † May 11, 2014 in Goiânia ) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Itumbiara .

Life

Celso Pereira de Almeida joined the religious order of the Dominicans at and studied from 1940 to 1945 at the university of his order philosophy and theology. In 1947 he made his profession . From 1950 to 1954 he studied theology in Rome and was ordained a priest on August 4, 1953 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 31, 1972 auxiliary bishop in Porto Nacional and titular bishop of Camplum . The Archbishop of Goiânia , Fernando Gomes dos Santos , donated him episcopal ordination on April 22nd of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Alain du Noday OP, Bishop of Porto Nacional, and Vicente Ângelo José Marchetti Zioni , Archbishop of Botucatu .

On January 14, 1975 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Porto Nacional. With the retirement of Alain du Nodays OP on May 5, 1976 he succeeded him as Bishop of Porto Nacional. On January 25, 1995, he was appointed bishop of Itumbiara .

On May 6, 1998, John Paul II accepted his early resignation for health reasons.

Act

Celso Pereira de Almeida was long-time President of the Land Pastoral Commission (CPT) in the Porto Nacional region. He was even threatened with death for his commitment and defended the state agricultural reform in court. He was an avowed opponent of the Brazilian military dictatorship.

In 2009 he was made an honorary citizen of Goiânia .
