Cephalotaxus latifolia is a species fromthe head family (Cephalotaxaceae). It is native to China.

description

Cephalotaxus latifolia grows as an evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach heights of up to 5 meters. The trunk bark is grayish brown. The branches are strong. The flat branches are 5.5 to 9 inches long and 4 to 5 inches thick.

The thick and leathery, more or less straight needles are linearly shaped with a length of 1.6 to 3 centimeters and a width of 2.8 to 6 millimeters. They have no stem and come off the branches at an angle of 60 to 85 degrees. The slightly asymmetrical base of the needles is wedge-shaped, while the tip is spiky. The edges of the needles are flat. The top of the needle is dark olive green and there are eleven to 15 white stomatal bands on the needles.

The flowering time of Cephalotaxus latifolia is in May. The male cones stand on a 1.5 to 2.5 millimeter long stem and consist of around nine cone scales. The female cones have a 2 to 4 millimeter long, scaly stem and stand together in groups of two to six. They are surrounded by a seed coat ( arillus ). The obovate seeds are 1.8 to 2 centimeters long and have a spiky tip.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Cephalotaxus latifolia is in China. There it includes Chongqing , northwestern Fujian , northern Guangdong , northeastern Guangxi , southeastern Guizhou , southwestern Hubei , Hunan , western Jiangxi, and southeastern Sichuan .

Cephalotaxus latifolia thrives at altitudes of 900 to 2400 meters. The species occurs in mountains, where it grows mainly in thickets.

Cephalotaxus latifolia is classified as "low endangered" in the IUCN Red List . The destruction of forests is named as the main risk. In the past, parts of plants may also have been collected for medicinal purposes.

Systematics

It was first described as Cephalotaxus sinensis var. Latifolia in 1975 by Cheng Wan-Chun and Fu Liguo ( Fu Li-Kuo ) in Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica , Volume 13 (4), page 86. Fu Liguo raised the variety as Cephalotaxus latifolia in 1984 in Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica , Volume 22 (4), pages 280–281 in the rank of an independent species. Both the first description and the species description published later are considered invalid today because two different types, a female and a male plant, were described. The valid first description as Cephalotaxus latifolia was published in 1999 by Cheng Wan-Chun and Fu Liguo in Novon , Volume 9 (2), pages 185-186. A synonym for Cephalotaxus latifolia W.C. Cheng & LK Fu is Cephalotaxus harringtonii var. Latifolia (WC Cheng & LK Fu) Silba .
