Chöying Dorje ( Tib .: chos dbyings rdo rje ; * 1604 in Golog ; † 1674 ) was the 10th Karmapa of the Karma Kagyü School of Tibetan Buddhism .
biography
In accordance with the prediction of his predecessor Wangchug Dorje , Chöying Dorje was born in Golog, a region in northeastern Tibet . He was recognized by the 6th Shamarpa Chökyi Wangchug (1584-1630) and trained in the tradition of Karma-Kagyu.
At the age of six, Chöying Dorje is said to have shown an extraordinary talent for painting and sculpting. A series of pictures by the 10th Karmapa on the life story of Buddha Shakyamuni is particularly well known .
Chöying Dorje foresaw the wars and the political strife that would fall upon the country. He was aware that the Gelugpas would enforce their political interests at the time with the help of the Mongolian army. Knowing that he would be forced to leave central Tibet , he distributed most of his property to the poor and appointed the 5th Goshri Gyeltshab Rinpoche Dragpa Chöyang (1618-1658) as his regent. Gushri Khan's armies attacked Samzhubzê and continued to wreak havoc in Tibet. The likelihood was high that they would reach the seat of the Karmapa. Chöying Dorje escaped with servants and lived in the wilderness of Bhutan for more than three years . They continued to travel to northern Yunnan , Burma and Nepal . Wherever he was, Chöying Dorje cultivated the Dharma . He was also able to start a few monasteries along the way. The 10th Karmapa only returned to his homeland after more than 20 years. He recognized Yeshe Nyingpo (1631–1694) as the 7th Shamarpa to become his spiritual heir. In addition, he recognized Norbu Sangpo (1660–1698) as the 6th Goshri Gyeltshab Rinpoche and he also recognized the 5th Nenang Pawo Rinpoche Tsuglag Thrinle Gyatsho. Chöying Dorje died at the age of 71. Norbu Sangpo became ruler of Tshurphu , and the main lineage holder of the Karma-Kagyu was Yeshe Nyingpo.
The political landscape had changed after the fall of the last King of Tsang and Ngawang Lobsang Gyatsho , the 5th Dalai Lama , officially became ruler of Tibet.
