Thongwa Dönden ( Tib .: mthong ba don ldan ; * 1416 in Kham ; † 1453 ) was the 6th Karmapa of the Karma Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism .

biography

As a child, Thongwa Dönden, at an encounter with Ngompa Chadral , a disciple of the 5th Karmapa , declared that he was the Karmapa. He was crowned by the 3rd Shamarpa Chöpel Yeshe, in Karma Gön . Chöpel Yeshe, Jamyang Dragpa , Khenchen Nyephuwa and especially Ratnabhadra , the main lineage holder of the Karma Kagyu at the time, taught him the teachings of the Kagyu lineage .

At a young age Thongwa Dönden began to design many tantric rituals and founded a kind of liturgy for the Karma-Kagyu. He was also instructed in the teachings of the Shangpa- Kagyu and integrated the teaching of the Shijay of the Yogini Machig Labdrön into the teaching system of the Karma-Kagyu. Thongwa Dönden gave many teachings, had monasteries restored and books printed to strengthen the Sangha . When he anticipated his imminent death, he withdrew into retreat and transferred the reign to the 1st Tshurphu Gyeltshab Rinpoche Peljor Döndrub (1427–1489). He also left a clue as to where he should be reborn next. His spiritual legacy was Bengar Jampel Sangpo (Tib .: ban sgar ba 'jam dpal bzang po ) of a famous in the Karma Kagyu Mahamudra wrote -line supplication. Thongwa Dönden died at the age of 38, his successors were Bengar Jampel Sangpo (15th - 16th centuries), who became the main teacher of the 7th Karmapa, and Goshri Peljor Döndrub.
