geography
The glacier extends from the top of Monte Leone to the lake of the same name, the Chaltwassersee, which is 2756 m above sea level. M. lies. In earlier times, ice was broken down on the Chaltwasser glacier. A witness of this work is the depicted old stone tower, which served as a cable car anchorage. From here ice was transported to the Simplon Pass road built under Napoleon . On old drawings from the stagecoach period you can see how the Chaltwasser glacier reached to the place of the depicted stone tower.
The Chaltwasser glacier lies on the watershed between the Po and the Rhone . The Chalti water rises from the Chaltwasser glacier , several streams which finally pass the Simplon pass road at the Chaltwassergalerie and flow together in the Taferna. The water continues to flow over the Saltina and the Rhone into the Mediterranean . A small part of the water of the glacier flows over the Torrente Cairasca, the Diveria , the Tosa , the Ticino and the Po into the Adriatic Sea .
From Lake Chaltwasser, a path leads over the Chaltwasser Pass to Italy . North and above the Chaltwassersees is the Monte Leone Hut of the Swiss Alpine Club , can view from which one the Chaltwassergletscher. The national border between Switzerland and Italy runs from the Monte Leone hut, past the Chaltwasser lake and across the Chaltwasser glacier to the top of Monte Leone.
