history
Chanthaburi is a very old Khmer settlement , probably from the 9th century. In the 14th century the city came to Ayutthaya and was used as a trading center and seaport. After the destruction of Ayutthaya, the local prince tried to make himself independent from Siam. The future king Taksin made short work of his recapture campaign in 1767 and had him executed.
