The Chapeauroux is a river in France that runs predominantly in the Lozère department in the Occitanie region . Its source is in the Margeride countryside , in the municipality of Estables , just north of the Signal de Randon summit . It initially drains in a westerly direction, but then turns north, passes the eponymous town of Chapeauroux , in the municipality of Saint-Bonnet-de-Montauroux , and immediately afterwards crosses the border to the neighboring Haute-Loire department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and region After a total of 56 kilometers , it flows into the Allier as a left tributary just across the border, in the municipality of Saint-Christophe-d'Allier . At its mouth, the Chapeauroux passes under the Viaduc de Chapeauroux of the Cevennes Railway of the same name .
