Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs (Carpentras)
The Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs ( German Chapel of the Black Penitents ) or Chapelle du Très-Saint-Crucifix is a chapel in the French town of Carpentras . It has been registered as Monument historique on the French list of monuments since 1997 .
history
A first brotherhood , founded in 1317 , occupied a hall in the Dominican monastery . In 1511 it took on the name "Brotherhood of Black Penitents" and enjoyed a great boom when on May 14, 1593 it was joined to the Arch-Brotherhood of the Most Holy Crucifix ( Très-Saint-Crucifix ) in Rome .
In addition to her devotional sermons, her main activity consisted of caring for prisoners and their families, visiting poor sick people and, after 1597, the liberation of those sentenced to death once a year.
After the brotherhood used the chapel of the gray penitents for a few years, they had their own chapel built between 1738 and 1741 according to a plan by the architect Antoine d'Allemand from Carpentras.
description
The single-nave building in the classicist style has side chapels placed between the buttresses that support the nave . The pendent vault is a special feature, which is not found in any other modern sacred building in Carpentras.
Outside, only the carefully composed facade is visible, possibly inspired by the Jesuit chapel. The ashlar facade, framed by pilasters, extends over two levels separated by a cornice . Between two narrow, deep niches, the portal is surmounted by a rectangular table framed with palm leaves and crowned by a round gable .
