Charia is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Charia is the central place of the canton Charia in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) La Asunta in the Sud Yungas province . The village is located at an altitude of 822  m on the left bank of the Río Boopi , which forms from the Río de la Paz , which flows from La Paz from a south-westerly direction , and drains to the Río Beni .

Charia is located on the eastern slopes of the Bolivian Cordillera Central between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Cocapata in the east.

Charia is 228 kilometers northeast of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name, by road.

From La Paz, the paved road Ruta 3 leads sixty kilometers eastwards over the La Cumbre pass to Unduavi , from where the Ruta 25 branches off , which continues as a dirt road in a south-easterly direction for seventy kilometers to Chulumani . From there an unpaved road continues to the northeast via Tajma . This road along the Río Boopi is repeatedly endangered by landslides and is not accessible all year round. After 87 kilometers you reach La Asunta , from there it continues downstream via Charia to Cotapata and Puerto Rico on the Río Boopi.
