Charles Allen, Allen Baron of Kensington , Kt. , CBE (* 4. January 1957 in Lanark , County Lanarkshire ) is a British businessman , television and radio managers and politicians of the Labor Party . He has been a Life Peer member of the House of Lords since October 2013 .

Life

Allen was born in Scotland . He began his career in 1974 as a financial accountant with British Steel ; he worked there for five years until 1979. From 1979 to 1982 he then worked as deputy. Audit Manager at TM Group Galagers plc. From 1982 to 1985 he was then employed at Grand Metropolitan plc , a chain that operated hotels , resorts, car rentals and casinos ; there he was Director of Grand Metropolitan International Services Ltd. He was Group Managing Director of Compass Vending and Grand Metropolitan Innovations Ltd (1986–1987), Managing Director of GIS Middle East Ltd (1987–1988) and, after the acquisition of Grand Metropolitan, Managing Director of Compass Group plc (1988–1991 ).

Since the early 1990s, Allen has held numerous other management positions in business and industry, particularly in the media sector. In 1991 he joined the television and media group Granada plc . He was CEO of Granada Television from 1996 to 2000 . He also became Group Chief Executive at the Grenada group. Allen played a key role in the acquisition of Forte Hotels (1997) and the acquisitions of London Weekend Television (LWT) and Yorkshire-Tyne Tees Television in 1994 and 1999, respectively. In 2001, the Granada Group merged with the Compass media group; Granada Compass was born. This merger was later followed by the split into Granada Media plc and the Compass Group. Allen stayed with Granada and became Executive Chairman of Granada plc in 2001 after the split; he held this position until 2004. As Grenada plc in a joint venture with the media group Carlton Communications merged to ITV plc to form, Allen 2004, Chief Executive of ITV plc. The media initially criticized Allen for not having enough experience in the media sector to take on the senior position at ITV plc. In August 2006, ITV plc announced that Allen would be leaving after 15 years with Granada. Allen continued to manage ITC plc until the beginning of 2007, when headhunters found a successor for him.

Allen has been Chairman of Global Radio UK Ltd. since 2007 . , the largest commercial radio network in the UK. In 2008, Allen became Chairman of the EMI Group ; he had previously worked as a consultant for the group for several months. At EMI he was Chairman until 2010.

Further management positions

Allen was also a non-executive director of the food company Tesco plc (1999-2010).

Since August 2013 he has been chairman of the Danish service company Integrated Service Solutions (ISS A / S); since March 2013 he has been a member of the board.

He is (as of November 2013) Chairman of the Executive Board (Chairman) of the 2 Sisters Food Group and Non-Executive Director of the media group Virgin Media . He is also Senior Advisor at the investment banking and securities trading company Goldman Sachs (Goldman Sachs Private Equity). He was also Chief Advisor for the British Home Office .

Since January 2013 he was Chairman of the British Red Cross ; Allen announced his resignation as Chairman of the British Red Cross in October 2013.

Allen was chairman of the Commonwealth Games 2002 in Manchester and Non-executive Director of the London Olympic Committee for the 2012 Summer Games in London . On May 25, 2012 he was appointed Mayor of the Olympic Village in London for the 2012 Summer Games.

Politics / Membership in the House of Lords

In March 2012, Allen was named Chairman of the Executive Board of the Labor Party by Ed Miliband , leader of the Labor Party .

On August 1, 2013, it was announced that Allen would be made a Life Peer and a member of the House of Lords for the Labor Party . On October 2, 2013, he was formally promoted to Life Peer; he bears the title of Baron Allen of Kensington , of Kensington in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea . He has been a formal member of the House of Lords since October 2, 2013. On November 6, 2013, with the assistance of Margaret Jay, Baroness Jay of Paddington and Melvyn Bragg, Baron Bragg , he was officially inducted into the House of Lords.

honors and awards

Allen was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire on the annual New Year's Honors list in 2003 , "in recognition of his services to the Commonwealth Games 2002" (For services to the XVII Commonwealth Games).

In 2012, he was in the annual New Year's Honors list for Knight Bachelor collected, "in recognition of his contribution to the 2012 Summer Olympics and the Paralympic Summer Games 2012 " (For services to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics).

Private

Allen is gay and openly gay . His hobbies include theater and traveling .

In 2008, Allen was voted one of the most influential gay and lesbian people in Britain in a poll conducted by the British daily The Independent . Charles Allen was reinstated at number 22; However, he lost seven places from his last placement in 2006.
