The national park in the south of the city of Darwin

The Charles Darwin National Park (English Charles Darwin National Park ) is a 13 km² park in the Australian Northern Territory at the gates of Darwin . The park borders the southern boroughs of Darwin and is on the east side of Frances Bay across from the city center and on the north side of the East Arm . Small parts of the park are within the Darwinian city limits.

The park includes areas of both ecological and cultural importance.

On the one hand, it protects the floodplain landscape of the bay of Port Darwin . In a system of small rivers, bays and islands, 36 of the 51 native mangroves can be found in the Northern Territory .

On the other hand, numerous traces of human settlement can be found in the park. Clam piles in the park indicate the Aborigines who have inhabited this land for millennia. In the recent past, the area was part of a network of military bases established during World War II . As part of the northern line of defense there are bunkers, one of which has been converted into a visitor center, and ammunition depots.

The national park, founded in 1998, is named after the natural scientist Charles Darwin .
