Charles Eldon "Chuck" Brady, Jr. (born August 12, 1951 in Pinehurst , North Carolina , † July 23, 2006 on Orcas Island , Washington ) was an American astronaut .
Life
Brady studied medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1969 to 1971 and received a doctorate in medicine from Duke University in 1975 . He then completed his medical internship at the University of Tennessee Hospital . As a sports physician, he worked at Iowa State University , the University of North Carolina and East Carolina University until 1986 .
In 1986 Brady joined the Navy and received training as an aviation surgeon. He then worked on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger (CV-61) and also with the Blue Angels aerobatic team .
Astronaut activity
In March 1992, Brady was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA.
STS-78
On June 20, 1996 Brady started as a mission specialist with the space shuttle Columbia on the longest flight of a space shuttle to date . The task was weightlessness experiments in the Life and Microgravity Spacelab (LMS), which were needed as a basis for future experiments on the International Space Station (ISS).

In 1999/2000 Brady studied at the University of Texas at Galveston for a master's in biology and then retired from active service.
Brady committed suicide near his home on Orcas Island on July 23, 2006 . He left behind his fiancée and their four-year-old son.
