Charles William Harley Hay Kinnoul, 16th Earl of Kinnoull (born December 20, 1962 ) is a British peer , lawyer , investment banker and politician (Crossbencher).

Life

Family and education

Charles William Harley Hay Kinnoul, 16th Earl of Kinnoull was born to Arthur Hay, 15th Earl of Kinnoull and his wife Gay Ann Lowson (* 1938).

He attended Eton College in Berkshire . At Christ Church College of Oxford University , he graduated with a Master of Arts from (MA). He studied law at City University London and attended the Inns of Court School of Law. In 1990 he was admitted to the Middle Temple Bar Association in London with permission to practice as a barrister .

Between 1962 and 2013 he carried the courtesy title Viscount Dupplin . On June 7, 2013, with the death of his father, he inherited the title of Earl of Kinnoull in the Peerage of Scotland (1633) and the associated title of the 16th Viscount of Dupplin (Peerage of Scotland, 1633), the 16th Lord Hay of Kinfauns (Peerage of Scotland, 1633) and the 9th Baron Hay of Pedwardine in the Peerage of Great Britain (1711).

Career

He began his professional career as an investment banker at Credit Suisse First Boston Ltd (CSFB), the investment banking division of Credit Suisse , where he worked from 1985 to 1988. In 1990 he worked as an authorized signatory (so-called "Underwriter") for the Hiscox Group at Lloyd's of London . Hay has worked for the Hiscox Group in various positions for more than 25 years. He was Director of Hiscox Underwriting Ltd (1995–1997). From 1995 to 2001 he was Managing Director Europe of Hiscox Insurance Company Ltd for the Europe division . From 2009 to 2012 he was Chief Executive Officer of the Hiscox Insurance Company (Bermuda) and a member of the management (so-called "Company Secretary") of Hiscox Ltd. Since 2000 he has been “Director Management & Administration” of Hiscox plc; since 2004 he has been a member of the Executive Management Committee there. He now only works part-time at Hiscox.

During his time with the Hiscox Group, he was also a director of Heritage Group Ltd (2001-2005) and HIM Capital Ltd (2007-2009). He is also the director of Construction and General Guarantee Insurance Company Ltd (2001-) and director of Amorphous Sugar Ltd (2001-).

Hay also performed various part-time functions in the insurance industry . He was Director of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (2009–2012), Director of the Reinsurance Association of America (2009–2012) and Director of the Association of Bermuda International Companies (ABIC; 2011–2012 ).

He is also a trustee of various charities . He is President of the Royal Caledonian Ball Trust (2013-), Deputy Chairman (Deputy Chairman) of the Red Squirrel Survival Trust (2013-) and since Trustee of the Royal Caledonian Ball Trust; from 1996 to 2009 he was its chairman.

Hay took on various honorary positions. He was a member of the Development Committee of Christ Church College, Oxford University from 2003 to 2009. He has been Lieutenant since 1992 and Captain of the Atholl Highlanders since 2008 . He has been a member of the Queen's Body Guard for Scotland ( Royal Company of Archers ) since 2000 . He was President of the London Section of the National Trust for Scotland (2007–2012). In 2008 he became a Freeman of the City of London . He has been a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society London (FRPSL) since 2006 ; since 1999 he was a member of the Royal Philatelic Society (MRPSL).

Membership in the House of Lords

Hay is non-party . In the by -election of hereditary peers for the House of Lords, made necessary by the departure of Roger Chorley, 2nd Baron Chorley and Flora Fraser, 21st Lady Saltoun , who both had voluntarily retired, Hay stood as a candidate in February 2015 . Hay received the highest number of votes in the second count on February 3, 2015 and was thus elected as a formal member of the House of Lords.

On February 11, 2015, at the beginning of the meeting in the House of Lords, he took his oath of office and signed the Code of Conduct .

Private

Hay is married. He married his wife Catharine Clare Crawford on June 15, 2002, the daughter of William Hamilton Raymund Crawford and his wife Marilyn Jean Colville. The marriage resulted in four children, three daughters (* 2003, twins, and * 2007) and one son, William Thomas Charles Hay, Viscount Kinfauns (* 2011).

Probable title heir (heir apparent) is his son William Thomas Charles Hay, Viscount Kinfauns.

Hay lived alternately in London (59 Scarsdale Villas, London, England) and Scotland (Pitkindie House, Abernyte , Perthshire ). In Perthshire he runs an agriculture (farm) based on organic farming . He currently lives (as of February 2015) in South West London .

His hobbies include skiing , real tennis , philately and motor racing .
