Charles Moore (athlete)

Charles Moore ( Charles Hewes Moore Jr .; born August 12, 1929 in Coatesville , Pennsylvania ) is a former American hurdler who became Olympic champion over the 400-meter distance in 1952 .

Moore, who was studying at Cornell University , won the 1949 NCAA championships over 440 yards and 1951 over 220 yard hurdles. From 1949 to 1952 he was unbeaten over 440 yards or 400 meter hurdles and was US champion four times in a row. In 1952 he was also US indoor champion over 600 yards.

At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , he won the 400 meter hurdles in 50.8 s. Moore also ran as the third runner of the US team in the 4 x 400 meter relay . In the final he was overtaken by Jamaican Herb McKenley , the two final runners ran equally fast, and Jamaica won gold ahead of the USA.

Charles Moore is 1.85 m tall and weighed 77 kg during his playing days.
