Charles Peshall Plunkett (born February 15, 1864 in Washington, DC , USA , † March 24, 1931 in Washington, DC) was an American rear admiral .

Charles Peshall Plunkett was an officer in the US Navy during the Spanish-American War and the First World War . He retired in 1928.

Life

Charles Peshall Plunkett was the only child of William Henry Plunkett (born March 26, 1826 in Ireland, † January 10, 1912 ) and Letitia G. Burke (born 1843 in South Africa).

From 1879 to 1884 he was a member of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis , Maryland .

During the Spanish-American War he was part of Admiral George Dewey's squadron in the Battle of Manila Bay .

After the Spanish-American War, he commanded both the battleship USS North Dakota (BB-29) and the armored cruiser USS South Dakota (ACR-9). He was then director of target practice and selection processes at the US Department of the Navy until the US entered World War I.

In July 1918 he took command of 5 US Navy 14-inch railway guns stationed in France, which fired from September 6, 1918 until Armistice Day.

After the end of World War I, he commanded destroyers of the US Atlantic Fleet, was Chief of Staff of the Naval War College , President of the Board of Inspection and Survey, and in command of the New York Navy Yard and the Third Naval District.

Plunkett was married to Julia Tuck Plunkett († July 17, 1918 ) and Eleanora E. Plunkett († December 31, 1942 ) and had a son from his first marriage, Charles Tuck Plunkett (* August 26, 1889 , † May 17, 1970 ) .
