Charles Lazelle Sawyers (born January 26, 1959 in Nashville ) is an American oncologist at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City .

Life

Sawyers graduated from the Princeton University a Bachelor in History of Science and in 1985 at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine an MD ( professional doctorate ). As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked with Owen Witte at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

After two decades at UCLA, Sawyers moved to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in 2006 . There he is today (as of 2012) Professor of Oncology and Pathogenesis . He also does research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).

Act

Sawyers is one of the researchers who brought tyrosine kinase inhibitors (including Imatinib , tradename Glivec, and Dasatinib , tradename Sprycel) to market. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors represent a new and successful active principle in the treatment of various tumors, especially leukemia .

More recent work by Sawyers deals with the treatment of prostate cancer patients who have become unresponsive to hormone treatment.

Thomson Reuters has ranked Sawyers among the favorites for a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine ( Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates ) since 2011 . He was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014.
