Charles de Choiseul , marquis de Praslin, (born February 1, 1563 ; died February 1, 1626 ) was a Maréchal de France .

Born in the abandoned Praslin Castle (Aube) ( Département Aube in the Champagne-Ardenne region), he was the eldest son of Ferry I. de Choiseul, seigneur de Praslin († 1569 in Jarnac ), Huguenot commander and Anne de Béthune (* before 1543; † after 1607), dame d ' Ostel .

Life

He gained his first military experience in the battles of the Wars of Religion under Jacques II. De Goÿon de Matignon , Maréchal de France and took part under Henri III. Participated in the siege of Paris in 1588 and 1589. after the king's death in 1589 he was one of the first to recognize Henri IV and was made governor of Troyes and lieutenant-général of Champagne . He also became captain of the 1st company of the gardes du corps du roy , adviser to the king and captain of the king's orderly.

In 1595 he was appointed Chevalier des Ordre du Saint-Esprit by the king .

During the reign of the Maria de 'Medici he was an advisor to the Queen Mother.

In 1611 he drove the Jesuits out of Troyes and, by clever tactics, compelled the rebellious princes to sign the Treaty of Sainte-Menehould

In 1619 he became Maréchal de France, when he played an important role in the wars of religion. In 1621 he took part in the siege of Saint-Jean-d'Angély . In 1622 he became governor of Saintonge and then of Aunis .

He died in 1626 at the age of 63, after 45 years as a soldier, during which he commanded an army nine times, besieged and conquered 53 cities, served in 47 battles on the command staff and suffered 22 wounds.

Charles de Choiseul rebuilt the castle in Ostel (Aisne) . The Latin words were worked into the foundation stone on March 20, 1570:

The castle no longer exists as it was demolished in 1810.
