Chasper Pult (born January 2, 1869 in Sent , Canton of Graubünden ; † October 31, 1939 ibid) was a Swiss linguist , Romance scholar , lexicographer and poet .
life and work
Chasper Pult spent the first ten years of his life in Massa Carrara , where his father Jon Pult was active in the trade. When the family returned to Sent, he met Peider Lansel , who was five years his senior .
Desk graduated from the district school Chur and studied after 1889 first chemistry, then Roman philology at the University of Zurich and the University of Lausanne , where he met the dissertation parler de Le Sent 1897 doctorate . It is the first dialect monograph in Graubünden, equipped with a dictionary, from which, for example, Constantino Nigra, as his Note etimologiche e lessicali reveals, drew his knowledge of today's Engadin.
Pult then taught at a Piedmontese private school and obtained the language teacher diploma in Genoa . From 1901 to 1934 he was a professor for Italian language and literature at the University of St. Gallen and in Chur. Pult also wrote casual poems and short stories.
Pult was a member of the Dicziunari Rumantsch Grischun DRG, founded in 1904 . When the first editor Florian Melcher died in autumn 1913 , Pult took over the management of the national dictionary on a part-time basis. He held this position for 26 years alongside his professorship in St. Gallen and Chur. His successor was Andrea Schorta .
Pult was a staunch opponent of an international, watered-down, characterless, Italianized or Germanized Romansh. His main work is primarily a scientific work in favor of the Romansh language and its culture and a lexicological work. Pult was the head of the Centro Culturale Svizzero in Milan and for some time presided over the Lia Rumantscha .
Pult had been married to Lola, nee Küng, since 1908. Their son was Jon Pult . Chasper Pult is the grandfather of the linguist and Romance scholar Chasper Pult (* 1949).
