Chatrak ( English Mushrooms ) is an Indian drama movie in Bengali that was released in 2011. Scriptwriter and director is Vimukthi Jayasundara from Sri Lanka .

action

Rahul ( Sudip Mukherjee ) goes to Dubai to start his career as an architect and benefit from the building boom there. After a while he returns to his hometown Calcutta to implement a major project. His girlfriend Paoli ( Paoli Dam ), who lives alone a long way from her family, is waiting for him there . Together they try to find Rahul's brother ( Sumeet Thakur ), who is considered by many to be crazy. Rahul also instructs a local to look for his brother in town. But sometimes it makes sense to look elsewhere, because Rahul's brother has renounced normal life and lives alone in the forest.

The story is about people who are expropriated for construction projects.

publication

The drama Chatrak has been screened at various film festivals such as the prestigious Directors' Fortnight at the 64th 2011 Cannes Film Festival , the 36th Toronto International Film Festival 2011 and the Pacific Meridian Film Festival in Vladivostok . This film has never been shown in movie theaters .

reception

The Hollywood Reporter commented on the drama Chatrak that "the abstract naturalism of the film creates a stark portrait of a blatant and carefree human society, but loses any meaning in the many non-events of the film, making nihilism ." The Variety criticized the film as an "extremely slow developing story" because "Jayasundara's main story is implemented very slowly". The online film magazine Notebook praised the film as it artificially portrays "staged dreams and nightmares, visible intuitions of the environment, a visual understanding of how corruption can affect society and corruption of the soul". Sight & Sound of the British Film Institute praised the film as "although the action may be at least initially unsettling, the film has both wild and some funny moments that the audience soon overtake".

Controversy

One scene in the film with explicit frontal nudity caused a sensation in India, especially in Calcutta, where the film was mainly shot. For this reason, a film version without this scene was shown at the Kolkata Film Festival 2011. Director Jayasundara announced that several versions of the film had been shot, some without this sex scene.
