The Cimbrian Peninsula ( lat.chersonesus cimbrica , Danish kimbriske halvø ), or also Cimbrian Peninsula or Jutian Peninsula , is a peninsula between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea , which extends from the Elbe estuary in the south over a length of approx. 450 km to Grenen in Vendsyssel in the north. It includes Jutland (Danish Jylland ), the continental European part of Denmark , most of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein and the part of Hamburg north of the Elbe .

Concept history

The term "Cimbrian Peninsula" is older than the term "Jutland" and has been known since ancient times. It can be found, for example, in Ptolemaios ' text Geographike Hyphegesis , in Chapter II.x as Κιμβρική Χερσόνησος ( kimbrikè chersónesos ). It is derived from the since the end of the 2nd century BC. Known Germanic people of the Cimbri . Whether these actually settled the peninsula or the nearby Elbe estuary cannot be said with certainty because of the poor ancient sources.
