Chester Dewey

Chester Dewey (born October 25, 1784 in Sheffield , Massachusetts , † December 15, 1867 in Rochester , New York ) was an American clergyman and botanist at Williams College . His author abbreviation is Dewey . Among other things, he made a name for himself in describing and classifying numerous species of sedges ( Carex ).

Life

Dewey began in 1802 his studies at Williams College , where he is particularly in mathematics and classical archeology (classical studies) excelled. After graduating in 1806 he studied with Stephen West Stockbridge , Massachusetts, theology and received in 1807 by the Berkshire Congregational Association an ordination . He was a pastor in Tyringham , Massachusetts before accepting a tutoring at Williams College in 1808. Dewey continued to preach in various churches throughout his life.

In 1810 Dewey received a professorship at Williams College and lectured in mathematics, physics , chemistry , geology and botany. From 1827 he was director of Berkshire Gymnasium in Pittsfield , Massachusetts, before he became director of Rochester Collegiate Institute , a high school in Rochester , New York , in 1836 . In addition, he lectured at two medical schools in New England ( Berkshire Medical Institution in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, 1822-1852; Medical School in Woodstock , Vermont , 1842-1849). In 1850 he was one of the founding professors at the University of Rochester , where he gave lectures in chemistry and science . In 1861 he retired . From 1837 to 1867 he kept a log of Rochester's weather.

In 1818 Dewey was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1863 of the American Philosophical Society . He held honorary degrees from Yale University (1825), Union College (1838) and Williams College (1850).

Dewey was married to Sarah Dewey (1782-1823) since 1810, with whom he had five children. In his second marriage, he was married to Olivia Hart Dewey (1801-1885) from 1825, with whom he had ten children. His grave is in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester.
