In 1933 Archbishop Ruggero Bovelli transferred the priory of San Michele to the Chiesa del Gesù and the name was changed to San Michele nel Gesù . During the Second World War , the church was damaged in air raids in 1944. In 1986 the parish again changed its name from "San Michele nel Gesù" to its current name.

The austere facade has brick cladding typical of Ferrara architecture.

Inside

The single-nave hall church contains some valuable works of art, such as the Annunciation by Bastarolo (approx. 1585), which is in the first chapel on the right. In the second and third chapels on the right are the two altarpieces by Giuseppe Maria Crespi from Bologna , depicting the communion of St. Stanislaus Kostka in the presence of St. Ludwig Gonzaga (1727) and the miracle of St. Francis Xavier (1729).

To the left of the entrance is the group of sculptures in polychrome terracotta from the 15th century by Guido Mazzoni depicting the Lamentation of the dead Christ , originally located in the church of Santa Maria della Rosa (damaged by bombing during World War II and then in the 1950s Years ago). Mazzoni's work, also known as Pianzun d'la Rosa in the Ferrara dialect , was moved to its current location, which was considered more prestigious, after the 1933 Ferrara Renaissance Exhibition.

In the first chapel on the left we find another work by Bastarolo, the blessing God the Father , located on the site of a crucifixion that was destroyed in 1944. The next chapel houses an altarpiece painted by Giuseppe Ghedini with Jesuit saints: Miracles of San Francesco Borgia and San Francesco Regis (1758).

Behind the baroque marble high altar is the grave monument of Duchess Barbara of Austria , wife of Alfonso II. D'Este, who died in 1572 . The work was completed twenty years after her death and is attributed to Francesco Casella based on a design by the court antiquarian and humanist Pirro Ligorio .

There are also works by the baroque painter Giacomo Parolini in the church.

Above the main entrance is the cantoria with the organ built in 1976 by Gianni Ferraresi (Opus VII) with electrical transmission and 25 stops .
