Chinese character lexicons are used to collect and explain Chinese characters .

Overview

The most important character lexicons for the Chinese language are presented in a chronological overview below. The focus is on works relevant to phonology for the partially unknown or rather problematic historical sounds , such as B. Old or Antique Chinese (especially its late phase: the language of Classical Chinese spoken in the 5th to 3rd centuries BC ) or Middle Chinese (around 600 AD).

In sinological practice, these works are mostly cited with their acronyms or abbreviations , which are also given.
