Choteau is a city in the US state of Montana , United States and the administrative seat of Teton County . The city is named after Pierre Chouteau, Jr. , a fur trader and explorer.
geography
Choteau is located in northwest Montana, approximately 20 miles east of the Rocky Mountains near the Flathead National Forest . Not far from the city is the Teton River . The urban area has an area of 4.74 km².
Choteau is crossed by US Highway 89 , which runs from Flagstaff in Arizona to the Canadian border. In addition, the US Highway 287 coming from Port Arthur (Texas) ends in Choteau .
In 2010 the population was 1684.
history
The city was founded in 1913. Agriculture has an important place in the history of Choteau.
Choteau was in the media in 1999 when presenter David Letterman bought an 11 km² ranch near the town.
dinosaur
Choteau is near one of the most important places for paleontologists, Egg Mountain. The Old Trail Museum in Choteau is the home of a Maiasaurafossil . Egg Mountain is also presented there with a commentary on its paleontological significance.
