reception

On Metacritic , the album achieved a Metascore of 78 out of a possible 100, based on 4 “positive” and one “mixed” ratings.

The Irish Times gave it 5 out of 5 stars. Cormac Larkin wrote that the "poignant album" digs "deep into the roots of American music". It touches on "the common ancestry of jazz and country" and yet comes back "fresh and courageously facing the post-genre future". Allmusic awarded 4.5 out of 5 stars and particularly highlighted the songs The Old Shade Tree , Scarlet Town , Noise Machine and Don't Think Twice, It's All Right .

MDR Kultur wrote that Thile found “a perfect partner” in Mehldau. Giuliano Benassi awarded laut.de with 4 out of 5 stars. It is "a high-quality album [...] that, despite its virtuosity, floats like a feather through the air". Werner Stiefele gave the same rating for Rondo . Like Benassi, he praised that "the difference in volume and presence of the instruments is a minor matter". This is achieved both with a “skilful mix” and by “Mehldau reducing the intensity of his playing [...]”. On the other hand, Welf Grombacher criticized in the Palatinate Merkur that “Thiles mandolin with Mehldau's piano does not produce a harmonious sound”, so the “great enthusiasm” does not “want to arise”.
