Christian Ditlev Graf von Reventlow or Christian Detlev Graf von Reventlow (born March 11, 1748 in Copenhagen , † October 11, 1827 in Pederstrup on Lolland ) was a Danish statesman and social reformer from the German-Danish noble family von Reventlow .

Life

Reventlow was born in Copenhagen as the son of Count Christian Ditlev von Reventlow (March 10, 1710 - March 30, 1775) and Johanne Sophie Frederikke (nee Baroness von Bothmer , August 25, 1718 - April 17, 1754). His mother was the daughter of Friedrich Johann von Bothmer (1658–1729) of a lieutenant general in the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg . He attended school at the Sorø Knight Academy and studied at the University of Leipzig . He then traveled with his brother Johan Ludwig and the economist Carl Wendt (1731–1815) as travel companions for study purposes in Western and Central Europe, but also in Norway, to return to Denmark in 1770 and pursue a career in government in Copenhagen. On July 31, 1773 he married Sophie Friederike Louise Charlotte von Beulwitz (1747-1822).

With the dismissal of the conservative government of Høegh-Guldberg in 1784, Andreas Peter Bernstorff , whom Reventlow always admired, regained power and influence in Denmark. Under this Reventlow could with the approval of the Crown Prince and later King Friedrich VI. of Denmark prepare land reform in Denmark and improve the economic living conditions of the rural population in Denmark. In collaboration with his friend Ernst Heinrich von Schimmelmann , he achieved free trade between the partial kingdoms of Denmark and Norway and the fall of the previously existing monopoly in trade with Iceland .

When he was released in 1813, he retired to the Pederstrup family estate on the island of Lolland, which he inherited in 1775. The manor house there with the surrounding landscape park is now a museum in his honor and at the same time conveys a picture of enlightened Danish living culture of classicism . The portraits of family members hanging there come from recognized artists of the time such as Stefano Torelli or Angelika Kauffmann .

Reventlow had been an honorary member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences since 1795 . He was awarded the Dannebrog Order in 1778 and the Order of Elephants in 1803 .
