Burkhard Heinrich von Schmeling (born January 29, 1823 in Stargard , † November 14, 1902 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Burkhard was the son of the Prussian major Friedrich von Schmeling (1788-1832) and his wife Emilie Henriette Friderike, née Gaudecker (1794-1823).

Military career

Schmeling visited the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin . On August 9, 1840, he was a second lieutenant of the 1st Guards Regiment walk the Prussian Army transferred. He graduated from the General War School in 1845/48 and participated in the crackdown on street fighting in Berlin in 1848 . In the years 1851 to 1854 Schmeling was assigned to the Biebrich NCO School. On his return he was appointed company commander in the school department and was made captain on June 14, 1855. On March 16, 1856 he came to the 1st Guards Regiment on foot, where he became chief of the 4th Company. He was transferred to the 26th Infantry Regiment on March 16, 1858 and to the 66th Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1860. There he was appointed major on May 10, 1862 and came on June 23, 1864 as a commander in the 1st Battalion of the 66th Infantry Regiment. There he was transferred to the fusilier battalion as commander on May 19, 1866.

During the German War of 1866 he fought near Münchengrätz , Preßburg and Königgrätz . For this he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on September 20, 1866 and was awarded the Order of the Crown, 3rd Class with Swords .

In the further course of his military career Schmeling was appointed commander of the Silesian Fusilier Regiment No. 38 on July 7, 1868 and in this position was promoted to colonel shortly afterwards on July 23, 1868 . He led the regiment in the war against France in 1870/71 and thus took part in the bombardment of Pfalzburg and the siege of Toul . During the siege of Paris he earned the Iron Cross 2nd class .

On February 20, 1873, Schmeling took command of the 22nd Infantry Brigade in Breslau , became Major General on March 22, 1873 and as such on October 13, 1877, Commander of Danzig . Here he was promoted to lieutenant general on June 11, 1876 and received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves , on September 9, 1879 . Schmeling was put up for disposition on August 17, 1882, with the award of the Order of the Crown, First Class with Swords on the Ring .

Schmeling married in York on November 23, 1848, the American Araminta Price (1828-1901). Several daughters resulted from this marriage:
