Christian Faul (painter)
Christian Faul (* 1967 in Erlangen ) is a German painter .
Life
Christian Faul studied from 1991 to 1997 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg with Hans-Peter Reuter and Leni Hoffmann . He completed the winter semester 1994/1995 in Cracow at the Academy of Fine Arts with Antoni Porczak . From 1999 to 2000 he stayed in Kyoto, Japan on a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service. In addition to his work in his own studio in Fürth, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg from 2001 to 2006. During this time his exchange with the artist Rolf-Gunter Dienst began . In winter 2005/2006 he moved into a work studio at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris as part of a residency grant . From 2008 to 2013 Christian Faul lived and worked in Berlin, since 2014 in Stäfa / Zurich.

Christian Faul works with oil paint on surfaces such as acrylic glass, aluminum laminated panels or a combination of both. His pictures get a special luminosity when the picture carrier , made entirely of acrylic glass, “becomes a kind of light box due to the high side edges. The light comes from the front, but is reflected back into the picture by the white wall behind it ”. In other works, a flat sheet of acrylic glass is attached to an aluminum layer plate in such a way that a light picture object appears to be floating in front of the wall. Still other picture objects consist of an aluminum layer plate on deep wooden cheeks, which protrude into the room. In any case, the paintings have round corners, remain unframed and are characterized by an object-like character. As a result, they are “both: image and thing”.
The artist chooses plants, cloud associations and koi carp as subjects . Even if parts of the painting appear superficially like a detailed representation of nature, it is not about a depiction. The artist rejects the categories commonly used in art, such as abstract , concrete and representational ; for him they are obsolete. A balance of asymmetries, filled and apparently empty surfaces is typical for his picture structure, whereby a harmonious overall impression is sought. The simultaneous abundance and emptiness in his work opens up a reference to Japanese aesthetics . In addition, the philosophical idea is reflected on the equality of what is present and what is absent and the mutual dependence of what is and what is not is considered. Since 2011, minimalist lines can be found both in the paintings and on the large-scale wall pieces. The aim here is a spatial effect that arises from sharply delimited lines and surfaces as well as from a seemingly pulsating continuum of color gradients.
