Christian Friedrich Elvers

Christian Friedrich Elvers (born July 16, 1797 in Flensburg , † October 2, 1858 in Kassel ) was a German law scholar and university professor .

Life

Christian Friedrich Elvers was the son of the Flensburg merchant, harbor and bridge master Johann Friedrich Elvers († 1842) and his wife Karoline Katharina, born Klautopf († 1838). He attended the grammar school in Husum and from 1815 to 1818 went to study law at the University of Göttingen , where Karl Friedrich Eichhorn, who taught church and constitutional law , was particularly influential for him. After his doctorate in 1818 and his habilitation in 1819, he was a private lecturer and from 1823 to 1828 an associate professor at the University of Göttingen and a member of the Göttingen Spruchkammer.

In 1828 he was appointed full professor for Roman law at the University of Rostock and a member of the Spruchkolleg, his research areas were Romance, German and canon law studies. In the academic self-administration he was dean of the law faculty in 1832/1833 and 1837/1838 and rector of the university in 1834/1835.

Elvers was appointed to the civil senate of the Kassel Higher Appeal Court in 1841 as a senior appeals judge. In addition, he was a member of the legal state examination commission. From 1842 he was a board member of the Evangelical Association of Friends of Israel in Kurhessen and in 1845 a founding and board member of the Hessen-Kassel'schen main association of the Gustav Adolf Foundation . He was chairman of the Kurhessischen mission association and member of the association for Hessian history. Elvers was the editor of several legal journals.

Christian Friedrich Elvers was in his first marriage (around 1825) married to Jakobine, b. Nickels and in second marriage from 1853 to Mathilde, geb. Feyerabend (1833-1911). The first marriage had three sons and a daughter, the second marriage two sons and a daughter. His eldest son Rudolf Elvers (1825-1891) became district administrator in Wernigerode / Harz.
