Christian Georg Hornbostel
Christian Georg Hornbostel (born May 15, 1778 in Vienna ; † June 6, 1841 there ) was an Austrian textile manufacturer and invented the mechanical silk loom in 1815 .
Life
Christian Georg Hornbostel was born in Vienna in 1778. After the death of his father Christian Gottlieb Hornbostel, he took over the management of the family-owned textile factory in the Viennese suburb of Gumpendorf . The company produced fashion, furniture and wallpaper fabrics. From 1822 to 1827 he had the privilege to produce the fine silk fabric Crêpe de Chine .
In 1816 he built a factory in Leobersdorf in Lower Austria . In order to increase production and also be able to weave complicated jacquard patterns, Hornborstel invented a mechanical loom powered by water power with the Pottendorf factory owner Johann Thornton in 1815. In 1824 30 “self-weaving chairs” operated by water were already in operation. In addition, Hornbostel operated two mills and a cotton spinning mill in Leobersdorf, in which eight fine spinning machines produced the yarn for its own weaving mills.
Hornbostel was a co-founder of the Austrian National Bank .
family
He was married to Auguste Friederike Johanne Becker (1787–1842), daughter of Rudolph Zacharias Becker , since 1804 . The couple had four sons and two daughters, including Theodor von Hornbostel (1815–1888).
