Christian Gerhard Leopold (born February 24, 1846 in Meerane , † September 12, 1911 in Bärenburg ) was a German gynecologist ; The Leopold handles are named after him, which are used to determine the position of the unborn child in the womb before birth.

Life and accomplishments

Christian Leopold was one of the most important German gynecologists at the end of the nineteenth century. Born as the son of a general practitioner in Saxony , he studied medicine in Leipzig from 1865 to 1870, where he was strongly influenced by Carl Siegmund Franz Credé , his professor in obstetrics and gynecology and later father-in-law. In 1870 he was awarded his doctorate. After participating in the Franco-Prussian War , he went to Breslau, Vienna, London and Edinburgh for further training and completed his habilitation in Leipzig in 1873 in obstetrics. From 1877 to 1883 he trained midwives in obstetrics at the gynecological clinic in Leipzig, but in 1883 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Leipzig. In the same year he was appointed head of the Royal Women's Clinic and Midwifery School in Dresden, as the successor to Franz von Winckel . Under his leadership, the Dresden Women's Clinic developed into one of the leading hospitals in Germany.

Most of his articles appeared in the Gynecology Archives . After Credé's death, he was the editor of this magazine from 1894 together with Adolf Gusserow . Together with Credé and Paul Zweifel he published widely used textbooks on obstetrics. Leopold died in Bärenburg in 1911 after a "heart attack" and was buried in the Johannisfriedhof in Dresden.
