Christian Strauch ("Christel", "Krischan") (* July 2, 1896 in Wetter (Hesse) , † August 1, 1955 in Dahlbruch ) was a German gymnast and army sports teacher with the rank of major at the army sports school in Wünsdorf .

Life

His parents were Wilhelm Strauch and Katharina Brand. After attending the Klosterberg School in Wetter (primary school graduation), he completed an apprenticeship as a painter with Christian Scherer in Wetter.

From 1915 to 1918 he served in the Imperial Navy as a seaman on the training ship SMS Deutschland and on the battle cruiser SMS Thuringia . On January 27, 1918, Strauch was awarded the Second Class Iron Cross as a senior seaman on the SMS Thuringia . After the end of the First World War, Strauch returned to Wetter (Hessen) .

In January 1919, Strauch enlisted in the Hundred Thousand Army Army and signed up for twelve years. His service began in the Reichswehr-Jäger-Regiment 32 in Merseburg (Saale). From 1920 to 1922 he was transferred to the Reichswehr Infantry Regiment 18 in Torgau on the Elbe. In January 1921, Strauch became an army master in apparatus gymnastics in Wünsdorf near Berlin . In the same year he trained as an army sports instructor at the Wünsdorf military gymnasium. From 1922 to 1925 Strauch served in Infantry Regiment 18 in Paderborn . During this time, Strauch was a competitive gymnast at the gymnastics club “Jahn” in Paderborn, gymnast in the Westphalia and Germany teams. In the gymnastics club "Jahn" he was also gymnastics supervisor and coach of the women's team. From 1926 to 1927, Strauch was an assistant sports teacher at the Army Sports School in Wünsdorf. From January 1927 he received an apprenticeship contract as a sports teacher for physical exercises as an employee. In May he passed the state gymnastics teacher examination at the Badische Landesturnanstalt in Karlsruhe. On July 9, 1927, he married Margarethe Kolbe in Torgau and moved to Wünsdorf.

In the period from 1934 to 1945, Strauch and the other three national coaches supervised the national war in 16 international matches. Germany achieved 15 victories. His son Wolfgang Peter was born on October 4, 1934. On March 7, 1935, Strauch was appointed army sports instructor and captain in civil service. In the spring of 1935, Strauch prepared the gymnasts of the Reichsheer for the gymnastics competition between the Reichsheer and the German gymnastics club held on March 31, 1935 in the Berlin Sports Palace .

In August his first book performance gymnastics was published. His second book Körpererschule in der Deutschen Wehrmacht was published in October .

In April 1936, Strauch took part in the “Olympic gymnast” working group in Wünsdorf. His students were Alfred Schwarzmann , Walter Steffens and five other gymnasts. Strauch was one of the four Olympic trainers. On June 10th and 11th, Strauch was judge on the pommel horse at the XI. Olympic Games in Berlin. His student Alfred Schwarzmann became Olympic champion of the twelve-fight in gymnastics and won the gold medal in the horse jump . In November, Strauch received the German Olympic Medal of Honor, Second Class. 1937 his wife Margarethe Strauch died on May 7th in a Berlin hospital.

The third and fourth textbooks by Strauch The Boxing School for Teachers and Trainers and The Art of Gymnastics were published in 1938.

Sports training in Wünsdorf was discontinued in 1939 when the Second World War broke out . In September, Strauch was transferred to the Infantry Replacement Battalion 68 in Brandenburg an der Havel . On December 28, 1939, Strauch married Irmgard Liebegott for the second time. His daughter Marie-Luise was born on October 4, 1940. In 1942 Strauch was transferred to the NCO School in Lübben (Spreewald) and in autumn 1943 to the Meseritz training camp in the Warthegau . There he was promoted to major . In the spring of 1945, Strauch fled to Torgau on the Elbe and from there to Tensbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein , from where he moved to Eichen in the Siegerland in November 1948.

In 1950, on the initiative of Strauch, the Olympic gymnastics group from 1936 took place in Eichen in June. Strauch's fifth textbook on apparatus gymnastics appeared. In June 1954, the President of the German Gymnastics Federation , Doctor Kolb, attended the anniversary celebration in Littfeld. After an operation, Strauch died on August 1st, 1955. He was transferred to Torgau an der Elbe and buried in the Torgau cemetery.
