Christian Winter (born August 5, 1934 in Großbundenbach ) is a German university professor for zoology .

Professional background

Winter first studied biology , chemistry and geography for the higher teaching post at grammar schools at the universities of Saarbrücken , Freiburg i. Brsg. , Mainz and Braunschweig and received his doctorate in 1962 under Friedrich Schaller in Braunschweig on the ecology and taxonomy of neotropical soil animals . He then worked as a research assistant in Braunschweig and at the universities of Munich and Regensburg . In 1972 he completed his habilitation on neurophysiology with Dietrich Burkhardt (1928-2010) in Regensburg and in the same year received a professorship at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . For many years, his scientific work focused on comparative sensory and neurophysiology, initially in crabs , later mainly in gerbils (Gerbillinae). He was involved in the development of models for the functioning of the peripheral hearing system in frogs, reptiles and birds. His diverse teaching was characterized by commitment and innovation (see also honors and prizes).

Management functions and honorary positions

Winter held the office of Vice President of the Goethe University for 12 years (1977 to 1983, 1994 to 2000), as well as several other offices (e.g. chairman of the university's convention, commissioner for foreign relations). In particular, he was in charge of internationalization, which was still suffering from the consequences of National Socialism and the Second World War . On the one hand, he developed close relationships with the University of Vilnius in Lithuania for Goethe University , and on the other hand he also laid the foundation for today's partnership between Goethe University and Tel Aviv University . Later he also looked after the first Chinese scholarship holders at the Goethe University. From 2001 to 2012 he was ombudsman for the students (the first such permanent institution at a German university). Since 2001 he has been chairman of the Friends of the Botanical Garden , which is now increasingly open to the Frankfurt citizenship. Since 2012 he has also been chairman of the board of the "University of the 3rd Age" at the Goethe University.

Honors and prizes

In 1989, Winter was the first German scientist to receive an honorary doctorate from Vilnius University after the Second World War . In 1997 he was awarded the innovation prize of the Wankel Animal Welfare Prize for animal welfare experiments. For his contributions to the international networking of the university, especially to the University of Tel Aviv in 2000, he received the Goethe University Medal of Honor. In 2001 he was made an honorary member of the Frankfurt Physics Association . In 2003 he was made an honorary citizen of the Goethe University.
