Christina Lutter

Christina Lutter (born September 17, 1970 in Vienna ) is an Austrian historian and professor at the Institute for History at the University of Vienna.

life and work

Christina Lutter studied history at the University of Vienna from 1989 to 1992 and completed her postgraduate training at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research (1992–1995). In 1997 she completed her doctorate with a thesis on political communication in the early modern period using the example of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Venice and King Maximilian I. Her habilitation as a university lecturer in medieval history followed in 2004 with a work on gender history on monastic reform communities in the 12th century, for which you u. a. was awarded the Carl Erdmann Prize of the Association of Historians in Germany and the Michael Mitterauer Prize.

From 1994 to 2007 she worked at the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research, initially as coordinator of the research programs humanities, social and cultural sciences and as deputy (from 2003) and interim (2007) head of the social sciences department.

Between 1998 and 2008 she held lectureships and visiting professorships at the Universities of Vienna, Linz and Klagenfurt, at the Humboldt University and the Free University of Berlin and in Lüneburg. Christina Lutter has been teaching Austrian history as well as cultural and gender history at the University of Vienna since 2008.

She has been a real member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) since 2015 and a main member of the Council of the ÖAW since 2017. She is also active as a scientific adviser and reviewer in numerous national and international committees and programs.

She is editor of the Cultural Studies series at Löcker-Verlag and author of the introductory volume of the same name, co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Kulturwissenschaften , was a board member of the journal Cultural Studies until 2018 , and is an executive board member of the International Research Center for Cultural Studies (IFK).

Research priorities

Her research focuses on the areas of cultural and gender history of the Middle Ages, with a special focus on forms of coexistence in communities between monastic, urban and court spaces. Since 2011 she has been a manager in the FWF- funded special research area Visions of Community on social and cultural communities in Central Europe.
