Gotthart Wunberg

God Wunberg (* 25. December 1930 in Wuppertal , † 5. February 2020 in Tübingen ) was a German Germanist , literary historian and cultural scientist and Emeritus Professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Tübingen . From 1996 to 2004 he was director of the International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna.

Life

Wunberg came from Barmen , a district of Wuppertal. He studied German , Protestant theology , pedagogy and philosophy at the University of Tübingen and the University of Minnesota (USA) and in 1957 with the dissertation The terms "symbol" and "myth" with Friedrich Creuzer to Dr. phil. PhD. Afterwards he was a teacher for English and philosophical propaedeutics at the Evangelical Landerziehungsheim Urspringschule in Schelklingen.

In 1962 he became a lecturer at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands . In 1971 he became scientific advisor at the German seminar at the University of Tübingen, where he was professor for modern German literature until his retirement . He was also vice president of the university from 1986 to 1986. He turned down a call to Bonn in 1973. In 1987 he was a Distinguished Visiting Humanities Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles . His students include a. Alfons Backes-Haase , Moritz Baßler , Klaus Müller-Richter , Ioana Crăciun, Roland S. Kamzelak and Baal Müller .

From 1996 to 2004 he was director of the International Research Center for Cultural Studies (IFK) in Vienna, until 2008 a member of the Board of Trustees of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (including the Commission for Cultural Studies and Theater History ). Wunberg has published several books with a focus on Viennese Modernism as well as essays for specialist journals a. a. Arcadia and text + criticism . He was also the editor of works by Samuel Lublinski , the Hofmannsthal Yearbook on European Modernism (the world's most important periodical for Hofmannsthal research) and the series “German Texts” ( dtv ).
