Christine Mary Humphreys, Baroness Humphreys (born May 26, 1947 ) is a British politician of the Liberal Democrats . Since September 2013 she has been a Life Peer member of the House of Lords .

Life

Humphreys is from Wales . She worked as an English teacher at a secondary school (Welsh-medium secondary school) in Penrhyn Bay . There, she was head of the Department of Vocational Training (Head of Vocational Education).

She began her political career in local politics . She was Councilor (Councilor) of the Colwyn Borough Council, the Municipal Council of Colwyn , and deputy chairman (vice-chair) in Wales Joint Education Committee. In 1999 she stood in the constituency of Conwy as a candidate of the Liberal Democrats for the election to the Welsh Assembly , but she was defeated by Gareth Jones ( Plaid Cymru ). However, she moved into the Welsh Assembly via the state list for the North Wales constituency . Humphreys was a member of the Welsh Assembly from May 1999 to March 2001. In the Welsh Assembly she was spokeswoman for the Liberal Democrats for training and vocational training (especially for 16+ education ), art and the Welsh language . In the Welsh Assembly, she was a member of the Post 16 Education and Training Committee and the Standards of Conduct Committee . She was spokeswoman for the Welsh Liberal Democrats in the areas of economy , environment and transport (Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Wales on Economics and the Environment). In March 2001, she resigned her mandate for health reasons. She was succeeded in the Welsh Assembly by Eleanor Burnham .

In November 2007 she was elected President of the Welsh Liberal Democrats. She is currently (as of February 2014) Councilor of the Llanrwst Town Council in Conwy Valley, North Wales, and there also Deputy Mayor (Deputy Mayor).

On August 1, 2013, it was announced that Humphreys will be named Life Peer and a member of the House of Lords for the Liberal Democrats. She was appointed as a so-called “working peer”. On September 18, 2013, she was promoted to Life Peer as Baroness Humphreys , of Llanrwst in the County of Conwy, and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since. On October 24, 2013, with the assistance of Jenny Randerson, Baroness Randerson , and Roger Roberts, Baron Roberts of Llandudno , she was officially inducted into the House of Lords. She gave her inaugural speech on November 28, 2013 in a debate about radio and television and their impact on the economy. Humphreys advocates reform of the House of Lords; the members of the second house of the British Parliament, in their opinion, should be elected, not appointed.

Humphreys is married and has two grown sons. Her hobbies include ornithology , traveling, and walking her dog . In the past, she was often criticized in the press for being late at events and meetings .
