Rainer Christlein
Rainer Christlein (born October 21, 1940 in Aschaffenburg , † March 20, 1983 in Munich ) was a German prehistorian .
academic career
Christlein studied at the University of Freiburg , where he received his doctorate in 1968. His dissertation ( quality groups among the grave equipment of the 6th and 7th centuries in southern and western Germany ) dealt with the social structures of the Merovingian period , from the analysis of numerous row grave fields he obtained different quality levels of the grave equipment (A – C, later supplemented by quality group D). He also evaluated the cemetery fields Marktoberdorf and Dirlewang and refined the chronological structure of the Merovingian period (structure in "layers" 1–4 based on the belt fittings).
From 1969 to 1973 he worked in the research project of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences on the Round Mountain near Urach , which was headed by Vladimir Milojčić , a prince's seat of the Migration Period and the Merovingian Period . Among the numerous works on early history in southwest Germany, in addition to articles on finds from Dettingen and Rüdern, his contribution to the Historical Atlas Baden-Württemberg with a mapping of the early Halemannic finds and, above all, his "Alemanni" book should be mentioned.
From 1973 Christlein worked at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in Munich, where in 1980 he took over the management of the department for prehistory. He initiated the introduction of aerial archeology and geophysics . The founding of the Society for Archeology in Bavaria eV and the magazine Das archäologische Jahr in Bayern go back to him.
