Christmas mass for the alumni of the Dresden Kreuzchor
The Christmas mass of the alumni of the Dresden Kreuzchor ( RMWV 71) was composed in its musical version by the Dresden Kreuzkantor Rudolf Mauersberger . It will be performed on Christmas Day in the Kreuzkirche in Dresden with a Mettenspiel The Eternal Light Entered there , based on texts by Guido Höller .
Choirs, performers, instruments
The Christmas mass is composed for three separate choirs, the four to six-part main choir with soprano solo, the four to eight-part altar choir with soprano solo and the long-distance choir, a two-part male choir. In addition to the choirs, the following performers perform five angels (soprano 1/2 and alto), four shepherds (soprano, alto, tenor, bass with two recorders), Joseph as speaking role, Maria (soprano) and the three wise men from the Orient (tenor , Bass 1/2). In addition to the costumed performers, a caroler consisting of two partial choirs appears, which is placed next to the altar choir.
The following instruments are used: flute, oboe, glockenspiel, tam-tam, triangle, double bass, celesta, harp, harmonium at the altar and organ, as well as children's instruments played by the angels at No. 21.
History of origin
Like the Christmas vespers of the Crucians , the Christmas mass was created in the Erzgebirge tradition. It was performed for the first time on the morning of Christmas Day 1936 in the Kreuzkirche in Dresden. With the transfer of the Erzgebirge Metten tradition to Dresden, Mauersberger dared an experiment [...] that had little success predicted . According to Matthias Herrmann, the Christmas mass is part of the increased ecclesiastical involvement of the Kreuzchor in times of National Socialism, which was promoted by Mauersberger. The Christmas message is proclaimed through games, words and song. The Schneeberg Christmas mass serves as a model for the Christmas mass. In 1952 a second version of the Christmas mass and the final version in 1960/1961 were created.
Structure, content, music
The Christmas mass is an interplay of choirs on the gallery and the altar, which is integrated by the opening and closing liturgy. The focus of the Mette is the depiction of the birth of Jesus Christ with the shepherds in the field, with Mary and Joseph at the manger and with the adoration by the shepherds and the three wise men. Only boys and young men are involved in the Mettenspiel. Mauersberger's music is predominantly used for Christmas mass , the prophecy according to Isaiah is one of the original compositions. The Christmas message consists of the angels 'proclamation: Don't be afraid (No. 14) for solo soprano and organ and the jubilant Glory to God (No. 15) for a four-part boys' choir. The song of the wise men from the Orient (No. 28) sounds oriental , accompanied by the instruments. Both the solo soprano role and the chordal use of the organ are kept simple in order to allow room for the tonal development of the boy's voices. The shepherds' songs are accompanied by drone basses from the harmonium. Some parts of the Christmas mass coincide with the Christmas vesper (RMWV 7).

Work: Christmas mass play of the Dresden Kreuzchor - RMWV 73
In 1974, Pastor Joachim Schöne, who had been the director of the Metten des Kreuzchor since 1966, rewrote the text of the Metten game based on a medieval template. Kreuzkantor Martin Flämig also exchanged a few songs. However, the basic musical substance with the liturgies as well as the popular imagery have been preserved. The new version is included in the catalog raisonné of Rudolf Mauersberger as a Christmas Mass play by the Dresden Kreuzchor (RMWV 73) .
