Christ Vespers of the Crucians
The Christ Vespers of the Kruzians ( RMWV 7) is a full-length sacred choral work by the Dresden Kreuzkantor Rudolf Mauersberger . They were based on texts from the Bible and the hymn book . The Christvesper is for boy solo voices, tenor solo and various choirs as well as for large and small flute, oboe 1–3, clarinet 1/2, bassoon, trumpet 1–4, trombone 1–3, tuba, timpani, glockenspiel, triangle as well as cellos and double basses , Lute, celesta and organ. The following choirs are used: a four- to eight-part mixed choir as the main choir, a two-part boys 'choir as the altar choir and a two-part male choir as the distant choir as well as four separately set up three-part Quempas boys' choirs. The work is performed every year on Christmas Eve in Dresden's Kreuzkirche .
History of origin and text selection
The Christ Vespers of the Crucians consists largely of arrangements and compositions by Mauersberger as well as works by other composers based on words from the Bible and the hymn book.
The origins of the Christmas Vespers lie in Mauersberger's time in Eisenach, when an early version in Eisenach was made between 1926 and 1928. In the first decades of the 20th century, the Crucian Christmas Vespers consisted of a string of Christmas carols and choirs. This was gradually redesigned by Mauersberger, the first version in Dresden was created from 1932 to 1936. Since this consisted mainly of arranged Christmas carols, the musicologist Matthias Grün believes that it cannot be regarded as an independent compositional work . In the years 1946/1947 Mauersberger created a new version of the work. The chorale melody from 1927, Jauchzet, ihr Himmel (RMWV 177), and the Quempas have become the basis of the Christ Vespers. Mauersberger was inspired by Paul Gerhardt's Berlin Christmas mass for Quempas, which is sung in four places in the church . Mauersberger set the course of the Christ Vespers to music based on the words of Luke's Gospel for boy solos and organ. The Kurrendekleidung bearing boys sing at the altar. The tower chants of the Crucians are an interpretation of the Christmas events and, as chorale arrangements for choirs, wood and brass, percussion and organ, a charming contrast to the gospel words. As with the Christmas mass of the alumni of the Dresden Kreuzchor, the recording of the prophecy is based on the Erzgebirge ( Schneeberg ) tradition.
In February 1963, Mauersberger completed the work on the Christ Vespers with the Introitus Prepares the Lord the way that introduces the piece.
With the Christmas Vespers and the introduction and musical arrangement of Mettenspiele on Christmas and Easter mornings, Mauersberger added not only liturgical but also landscape-specific elements to the performance repertoire of the Dresden Kreuzchor .
