Christo "Itso" Deltschew ( Bulgarian Христо Делчев ; born January 22, 1939 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian arachnologist , biospeleologist and university lecturer .

Life

Christo Deltschew grew up in Sofia, spent a lot of time collecting insects and arachnids in the city's parks and the surrounding mountains, and became head of the biology group at his school. From 1957 to 1959 he did his military service. Due to the conviction of his father Deltscho Deltschew for anti-communist activities, Christo was subsequently refused admission to study zoology. Instead, he first had to work as a worker. A little later, the entry requirements for university studies were changed and Deltschew was able to begin studying zoology at the University of Sofia in 1960 . There he soon joined a group of dedicated speleologists , with whom he explored the fauna of the Bulgarian caves . These activities prompted Deltschow to decide to devote his scientific work to spiders .

Christo Delchev (1967)

At the university, Deltschew received his first introduction to scientific work from Ivan Buresch , a member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and from 1947 to 1959 head of the zoological institute of the academy. Buresch is considered to be the founder of modern Bulgarian zoology and biospeleology. Buresch also provided him with the publications of Pencho Drensky , the leading Bulgarian arachnologist. In 1962 Deltschew got to know Drensky personally and received an initial introduction to arachnology from him.

In 1965 Deltschew received his diploma from the Faculty of Invertebrate Zoology at Sofia University for a thesis on the weaving spiders of the Vitosha Mountains . He was then employed as a biologist at the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences, where he worked until 2009. In 1977 Deltschew received his doctorate with a dissertation on faunistic, taxonomic ecological and zoogeographical studies of the Bulgarian cave spiders. From 1972 to 1985 he was a lecturer and from 1985 professor of zoology at the University of Sofia. In 1996 he was appointed head of the Department of Taxonomy, Faunistics and Zoogeography.

Right at the beginning of his scientific career, Deltschew began an intensive exchange with colleagues from all over the world, including Carl Friedrich Roewer and Hermann Wiehle in Germany, Pierre Bonnet and Louis Fage in France, Josef Kratochvíl and František Miller in Czechoslovakia, the Italian Paolo Marcello Brignoli and the American Herbert W. Levi . Throughout his research work Delchev has devoted the taxonomy and two genera and more than 30 species of spiders described . He wrote about 150 publications alone or with colleagues. In the last few decades, biogeography and, most recently, nature conservation have become more important in his work.
