Christof May

Christof May (* 1970 in Radolfzell ) is a German clarinetist and saxophonist .

May studied at the “ Royal Conservatory ” of The Hague from 1992 to 1998 jazz saxophone with John Ruocco and from 1998 to 2002 classical clarinet with Ab Vos. He completed his studies with a Masters Degree .

From 1995 he worked as a sideman a. a. with Susanne Abbuehl , Michel Portal , David Liebman , Jarmo Hoogendijk , Claudio Puntin , Samuel Rohrer , Florian Zenker , Amina Figarova , Eric Ineke and Trygve Seim .

He can be heard with Susanne Abbuehl on the albums “April” and “Compass” released by ECM . He toured Europe, Africa and North America and played a. a. in Cape Town, Maputo, Montreal, Portland, Oslo, Paris, Rome and other European cities. As a guest musician with the Dutch radio orchestra Metropole Orkest , he worked a. a. with Kenny Werner and Bob Malach and recorded CDs with a. a. Terry Bozzio and Yuri Honing . May u. a. as a guest musician with the symphony orchestras of Krefeld-Mönchengladbach, Aachen and Duisburg.

His own project Maygus is inspired by Miles Davis' music from the 1970s. The name of the project refers to the 1974 record "Dark Magus". The debut CD was released in November 2007 as Vol. 20 of the series “Jazzthing Next Generation”.
