Christoph Bernoulli (born May 15, 1782 in Basel ; † February 6, 1863 ibid) was a Swiss naturalist and economist from the family of scholars Bernoulli .

Life

Bernoulli was the son of the administrator and professor of eloquence Daniel II Bernoulli (1751-1834) and his wife Maria Magdalena Burckhardt.

Despite his conservative schooling and upbringing, Bernoulli was enthusiastic about the ideas of the French Revolution from an early age . He studied natural sciences at the University of Göttingen and successfully completed this course with a doctorate. He then worked as a teacher at the pedagogy in Halle . Here the founder August Hermann Francke laid the foundation stone for one of the most modern schools of its time in 1694. A teacher was responsible for about ten students and the natural sciences played an important role.

Bernoulli later switched to the canton school in Aarau and settled in Basel again in 1805. It was precisely his professional experience from his time at the pedagogy that reinforced Bernoulli's liberal attitude and he founded a private school in Basel in 1806. This Philotechnical Institute was structured similarly to the Pedagogy and was headed by Bernoulli until 1817.

In 1808 Bernoulli married Catharina Salome Paravicini in Basel. He had nine children with her.

In 1818 Bernoulli was entrusted with a chair for natural history at the University of Basel and in 1835 he was appointed professor for industrial sciences there. As such, he campaigned for the mechanization of the world and the modernization of society throughout his life.

His wife died in 1851. He survived her by 12 years. Prof. Dr. Christoph Bernoulli died at the age of 80 on February 6, 1863 in Basel.
