Hartmann made his profession on December 25, 1583 in Einsiedeln Monastery. His previous career is largely unknown. This was followed by studies in Milan and Bologna . When the Einsiedeln monastery took over the management of the Beinwil monastery in 1589 , Hartmann came there with other brothers. He was ordained a deacon in April 1591 and ordained a priest on February 22, 1592 . From Beinwil he was appointed to Einsiedeln as a monastery librarian.

In 1601, Hartmann began to write the history of the monastery of Einsiedeln on behalf of Abbot Augustin Hofmann . This was published in print with an edition of 1000 copies in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1612 . In 1612, for health reasons, he went to the Sauerbrunnen in Bad Griesbach in the Black Forest , which belonged to the Schuttern Monastery . He was friends with Franz Guillimann , with whom he maintained a lively correspondence and whose library he was able to win for the monastery library in Einsiedeln after Guillimann died.

Hartmann became provost of St. Gerold in 1614 . In this office he died of a stroke at lunch on Easter 1637 .
