history
Griesbach was first mentioned in a document in 1330. Because of the mineral springs , Bad Griesbach has been used as a bathing resort since 1578 . Due to a major fire in 1677 Bad Griesbach lost many bathers to the neighboring town of Bad Peterstal. The community of Griesbach was formed in 1809, but was called Döttelbach until 1863 . In 1932 the community received the right to call itself Bad Griesbach. Since the 1970s, Bad Griesbach has merged with Bad Peterstal to form the Bad Peterstal-Griesbach community.
Griesbach received an early literary monument through the stories by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen , in which it is an occasional scene of action as the location of the Sauerbrunnen .
Two historically important events also occurred in Bad Griesbach:
- The Grand Duke Carl of Baden signed the new Baden Constitution on August 22, 1818 in the Red Building .
- The Reich Finance Minister and former Vice Chancellor Matthias Erzberger was murdered on August 26, 1921 above the village. While walking, he was shot by two former naval officers and members of the Ehrhardt Brigade . The assassination attempt was prepared by the Teutonic Order under Manfred von Killinger (1886–1944) and was directed against Erzberger as a representative of the Weimar Republic .
A memorial stone in a hairpin bend on Bundesstraße 28 towards Alexanderschanze / Freudenstadt commemorates this bloody act. On August 31, 1921, a large funeral procession took place for Erzberger in Biberach an der Riss , where he was a member of the Reichstag for the Center Party until 1918 . His grave is also there. The House of History Baden-Württemberg has set up a permanent exhibition in Erzberger's birthplace in Buttenhausen near Münsingen .
On July 1, 1973, the Bad Griesbach community was incorporated into the new Bad Peterstal-Griesbach community.
