Coat of arms and motto

Episcopal coat of arms

Hegge's bishop's motto reads: Credidimus caritati - “We believed in love”.

The upper field (red bar on a golden background) takes up the coat of arms of the diocese of Münster , where, with the exception of his Roman studies, the life of Auxiliary Bishop Hegge took place. The three gold stars refer to the coat of arms of the city of Rheine , the home of Hegges, which is in the Borken-Steinfurt region, for which he is responsible. The star is also used in the flag of Tunisia , in which the titular diocese of Sicilibba is located.

The red background of the field at the bottom right indicates its namesake, the martyr Christophorus . The rose with its silver wreath of flowers for the Mother of God Mary , the "flawless rose" (Laurentian litany) and with the red wreath of flowers for St. Elisabeth , the patroness of the home parish.

The field at the bottom left relates to the motto. The golden heart stands for the divine love, which was revealed when God sent his Son as atonement for our sins (cross). The blue background stands for people, on God's love, faith. ( Joh 4,7−16  EU )
