Christoph Hofinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christoph Hofinger (* 1967 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian social researcher . Together with Günther Ogris , he founded the private research institute SORA Institute for Social Research and Consulting in 1996 and has been running it with him ever since. In Austria, SORA regularly prepares projections and analyzes of voter flows for the ORF .

Life

Hofinger studied German, journalism and psychology at the University of Vienna and then completed a post-graduate course in sociology at the Institute for Advanced Studies . He has been active in social and political research since 1989.

Hofinger is known to a wider public from the ORF special broadcasts for state parliament, federal president and national council elections, where he presents the projections and analyzes that are current during the election evening, usually together with Günther Ogris from the ORF studio. In addition, Hofinger has been presenting the Working Climate Index for several years now, which has been well received in the Austrian media.

As one of Austria's leading pollsters, Hofinger appears regularly in public, in TV interviews and in the press, especially in election campaigns. After the state elections in Carinthia in 2009, in which the election results differed significantly from the polls previously published, BZÖ politicians like Herbert Scheibner or Stefan Petzner attacked Hofinger's institute massively, accusing him of "manipulating" and deliberately "falsifying" polls. Hofinger spoke of "credit damage" and announced that he would be examining a legal action. Hofinger is regularly critical of the dominant position of opinion polls in political reporting in the media, for example in the often quoted statement: “Anyone who publishes surveys should state the error rate. Even if it makes the whole thing unexciting. "

The weekly magazine Falter describes Hofinger as an "exception of the pleasant kind" among opinion researchers, as he is "mostly correct with his forecasts" and knows how to "explain them unobtrusively".
